Cycling Safaris In Kenya

With Kenyas fantastic climate, endless tracks where motor vehicles are rarely seen and a vibrant racing and recreational scene, Kenyan plains are  really great a place to cycle. Over the last few years the number of mountain biking and road racing competitions has increased and there is now a packed annual calendar of events including multi day races, GPS adventure rides, single day cross country events, road races and triathlons.

If racing is not your thing, then there are thousands of kilometers of tracks that weave their way through savannah, forest, bush and mountains and there is nothing quite like cycling through a herd of grazing giraffe.

The bicycle is Kenya’s most popular form of transport though often looked down upon in favour of gas guzzling 4x4’s the bicycle is beginning to catch the attention of inner city office workers fed up with sitting in traffic and it is our hope and belief that one day, in the not too distant future Nairobi and other cities in Kenya will become bike friendly locations.

The Safaris that the Sports Wave Africa Tours run are lengthy rides into those incredibly scenic, yet hard to reach areas.  They can be from a full days ride down to Lake Magadi to several days of cycling that can take you through the parks of Kenya and anywhere you desire

Perhaps one of the best rides we do is from Nairobi to the Indian Ocean.  A ride that covers over 500km in a week and takes you past Mt Kilimanjaro and on to the deep blue shores of the Indian Ocean.  Rides are tailored to the group’s ability and size.

Hot on the heels come mountain bike safaris, a 21st century adrenaline buzz. Like, these offer the same fabulous combination of up-close immersion in the bush and the ability to cover more ground than simply exploring on foot. Without the confines of a vehicle around you, there’s a serious thrill in feeling up close and personal with the wildlife.

Most mountain biking safaris are offered as part of a spectrum of activities at a safari lodge or camp, and it’d be common to go out for an afternoon or so following a morning game drive. Certainly it’s an excellent way to burn off the endless amounts of (delicious) food that seems to come with a safari.  For those who want to dip their toe into the world of mountain bike safaris we can arrange this at several camps, depending on what else you’d like to include in your trip.

For truly committed adventurers, we can arrange several days of mountain biking in the wilderness. This is the sort of adventure that you usually only get to do if you know someone, and fortunately, with over 10 years of experience in Africa, we can offer just that. Our absolute favourite multi-day mountain biking trip is through the wild and remote bush in Northern Kenya and can be tailored to your own requirements.
